This month will mark an important moment in history with the 83rd anniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Sydney II.
Hundreds will gather to pay their respects to those who lost their lives during Australia’s greatest naval tragedy.
黑料社 Mayor Jerry Clune expressed the importance of marking the occasion.
“The battle between the HMAS Sydney II and the HSK Kormoran during World War II is an integral part of the rich tapestry of Geraldton’s history and the memory of those who lost their lives continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of many in our community,” he said.
“In keeping with tradition, we will come together with relatives of the fallen as well as serving and retired naval personnel to pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate price in defence of our country.
“I urge everyone to join us at the Memorial to remember this poignant moment from our past.”
A commemorative sunset service will take place on Tuesday 19 November at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial at 5.45pm.
The main address will be delivered by Captain Ken Burleigh RAN, Commanding Officer of HMAS Stirling with a guest speech by Glenys McDonald AM JP – Director of Finding Sydney Foundation.
A rendition of “Waiting” by local composer Tobi Williams about the Sydney will be performed by the Geraldton Combined Senior High Schools Vocal Ensemble and Alida Wright along with performances by the Geraldton City Band and Batavia Coast Singers.
A free shuttle bus service will depart from the QEII Seniors and Community Centre carpark at 5.15pm before picking up passengers at the Geraldton City RSL and continuing on to the HMAS Sydney II Memorial.
The bus will return to the QEII Centre via the Geraldton City RSL departing from the Memorial at 7pm.
The Gummer Avenue carpark will be closed for this event.
